About Google Fiber
Google has released its new high speed fiber optic TV & internet plan to those lucky residents of Kansas City. For those of you who have not heard of it, we are going to break down what it is and how much it all costs;
Here are your plan options:
Free Internet
You pay a $300 one-time installation fee (subject to other taxes and fees) and you get a Network Box included. This guarantees you free internet at “average speed” for at least seven years. The package grants access to 5Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload, and no data caps.
The Network Box is Google’s internet router specifically for their service. It has four Ethernet ports and high speed Wi-Fi connectivity.
Gigabit Internet at $70 per month
Your installation fee is waived and you pay $70 per month plus applicable taxes and fees. You get a Network Box and a 1TB Google Drive account. This is a one year contract which includes 1 Gigabit upload and download with no data caps.
For those of you that do not know, Google Drive is similar to Dropbox. It is an online storage system that you can sign up for which is free up to 5GB and charges you per month for additional storage space. Anyone can sign up for this as long as they have a Google/Gmail account. Google Drive is accessible and syncs with computers and mobile devices (including Apple) as well as all of Google’s offered products in the Fiber system including TV, Storage Box, etc.
Gigabit Internet + TV at $120 per month
Your installation fee is waived and you pay $120 per month plus applicable taxes and fees. You get a Network Box, TB Google Drive account, TV box, Nexus 7 tablet, and a Storage Box. This is a two year contract with Full TV channel lineup, 1 Gigabit upload and download, and no data caps.
The Google Nexus 7 tablet serves as your “remote” for your Google Fiber TV. It is a full functioning Android tablet that links up with your entire Google Fiber system.
The TV box is Google’s cable box, which includes all the basic channels plus some, On-Demand, internet content, and HD TV. You can see a list of channels HERE.
The Storage Box has 2TB of storage to pool between your TV, shows, movies, Etc.
Optional: Chromebook starting at $299
There are three different Chromebook models.
Acer AC700 at $299
With a 11.6” screen and just over 3lbs, this netbook can run for 6 hours of continual use. It has 2GB of RAM and a Intel dual-core Atom processor (N570). It has a built in webcam and two 2.0 USB ports.
Samsung Series 5 550 at $449
This netbook has a 12.1” screen and only weighs two ounces more than the Acer AC700. It also lasts for 6 hours continuously. It has 4GB of RAM, a Intel Core processor, a built in HD Camera, two 2.0 USB ports, and a Display output that is compatible with HDMI, DVI, and VGA.
Samsung Series 5 at $349
This netbook has a 12.1” screen (just like the Series 5 550) and weighs 3 lbs. It lasts for 8.6 hours of continual use and has 2GB of RAM, an Intel dual-core Atom Processor (N570), a built in webcam, two 2.0 USB ports, and a Micro-VGA port.
